Why do you need a smoke detection system in a domestic home?
There are two sets of regulations which cover the electrical installation of a smoke detection system. These are BS5839-6:2019 for the smoke detection system itself and BS7671:2020, which governs the electrical installation, just like any other electrical installation. These regulations will cover whether a smoke detection system is needed and how it should be designed, and if it is mains powered, how it should be installed electrically. At this point, the system becomes like any other electrical installation, such as for heat, lights and power in a domestic home.
Smoke detection systems are designed to alert the resident of a domestic home to the threat of fire. A system of sensors should be strategically located on all floors of a home in key areas such as an entrance hall, kitchen, living room and upstairs landing. If a home has a third floor, such as with loft conversions, there should also be a sensor located there. These sensors are linked together electrically to communicate, and will sound an audible alarm if they sense smoke and the potential for fire, therefore it is essential that they are fully operational at all times.
Our smoke detector upgrade services in Scotland
A mains-powered smoke detection system should be included in a standard EICR (Electrical Installation Condition Report) and to ensure your smoke detection system is suitable we can:
- Detect faults in the electrical installation
- Inspect for damage and deterioration of sensors and sounders
- Identify where a system has been installed incorrectly
- Identify where sensors are incorrectly located or have been removed
Our inspection and testing services include routine continuity testing, insulation resistance testing and RCD testing to ensure that the electrical wiring is correctly installed, that electrical components are working correctly and that circuits are operating safely. This means they are not overloaded, have the correct protection devices installed and have suitable earthing and bonding.
