If you are an employer responsible for the safety of employees in your commercial workplace or a landlord responsible for the safety of tenants in a domestic rental property, then you need to undertake regular PAT testing to ensure you fulfil your legal duty to maintain your electrical services. Contact Apardion today for professional and effective PAT testing services in Scotland.

What is PAT Testing?

As an employer or landlord, your responsibilities are to ensure people are not at risk from the infrastructure of a building in terms of its services, and also that they are safe from any harm posed by the contents of the building. In terms of contents, this can include tools, equipment and machinery causing electric shocks or a fire, and the best way to ensure this safety is through PAT Testing.

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is the process used to check electrical appliances for safety, through a series of visual inspections and electrical testing. This should be carried out by a competent person who is skilled and qualified, and on a suitable frequency.

What is included in PAT Testing?

A PAT testing programme should involve any electrical item that is plugged into a power source, such as office items like PCs, laptops and photocopiers, and more heavy duty tools and equipment such as drills, grinders and sanders. This should also include communal kitchen equipment found in a workplace or rented accommodation, such as kettles, fridges, microwaves and freezers.

Our PAT testing services in Scotland

If you contact Apardion for your PAT testing services, we will undertake the following for you:

  • Inventory – We will identify all the electrical items on your site which should be tested, and design a testing schedule. We will also set-up a system with the location, description and a unique ID number recorded for each item.
  • Risk assessment – We will carry out a risk assessment of each item to determine how frequently it should be tested, based on usage, environment, durability etc.
  • Visual inspection – Every item will be visually inspected for signs of damage to the wiring, lead, casing or any visual element of the item.
  • Electrical tests – We will carry out a series of electrical tests on each item, such as earth continuity, lead polarity and insulation resistance.
  • Results – We will generate a pass/fail result, record these results and suitably identify each item, including a date for when the next test is due.
  • Remedial action – We will identify and isolate any items which have failed the PAT test, and make recommendations for remedial action.
  • Report – We will provide you with a comprehensive report on the PAT test findings for all items.
